St. Elizabeth's Church – Blue Church, Bratislava Officially called the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, it is commonly known simply as "the Blue Church." The early 20th-century Secession Church of St. Elizabeth is characterized by its distinctive blue color. This is why it is popularly known as the Blue Church. Both the interior and exterior of the church are painted in light blue and decorated with blue majolica; the roof is covered with blue-glazed ceramic tiles. A 36.8-meter-high round tower is part of the structure. Its façade is dominated by an elaborate mosaic. Completed in 1913, the church was built by the renowned Budapest architect Ödön Lechner in the Secession style with oriental elements. Many visitors consider this small architectural gem to be the most beautiful church in Bratislava. Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia (1207-1231) is arguably one of the most remarkable and prominent canonized women in Europe—along with Saint Hildegard of Bingen. She has been highly venerated since ancient times, particularly for her charitable work for the poor. Popularly known today is the Miracle of the Rose, which, however, is not documented in the major biographies or early collections of legends. Saint Elizabeth's feast day in the (Roman) calendar of saints is November 17th, although in Germany and the Protestant Church it is November 19th.
