The Butrint Lagoon borders directly on the Mediterranean. This is where Albania's most important archaeological site is located. 2,500 years ago, Butrint developed into a popular spa and festival resort that was well-known and popular beyond the borders. People seeking healing made pilgrimages from far and wide to the sacrificial sites, temples and fountains of the lagoon. The Roman poet Virgil wrote of a "second Troy in miniature". Over the centuries, changing rulers left behind stone testimonies of their power. The Turkish ruler Alibaba built himself a stronghold here.

Butrint National Park lies south of the city of Ksamil and encompasses marshes, forests, beaches and islets. This vast natural area also stands out for housing an impressive archaeological park where the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Butrinto lie. A unique place that combines historical heritage and nature.
