c13th hilltop church fabulous views over the Blackmore Vale

One of the 'Camelot Churches' of South Somerset and has been a Grade II* listed building since 1961.  Largely dates from c13th and c15th. Much restored in the 1850s and 1870s. c18th poet and satirist Charles Churchill was at one time curate at South Cadbury

If you have time, try to walk around the Hill Fort! Cadbury Castle is a Bronze and Iron Age hillfort associated with King Arthur's legendary court at Camelot. The site was reused by the Roman forces and again from c. 470 until some time after 580. In the c11th century, it temporarily housed a Saxon mint. Evidence of various buildings at the site has been unearthed, including a "Great Hall", round and rectangular house foundations, metalworking, and a possible sequence of small rectangular temples or shrines

Designed by Henry Flitcroft for Henry Hoare II in 1772, King Alfred’s Tower is a 160ft (49m) high folly, standing in the grounds of the National Trust's Stourhead estate. The tower commemorates the accession of George III to the throne in 1760 and the end of the Seven Years War, with its position believed to be where King Alfred the Great rallied his troops in 878.

Great views southwest across the Somerset Levels from this little hill on the edge of Cucklington. The viewpoint is at about 135m high and there is a bench to stop and take a break.

King Alfred's Tower is managed by the National Trust and is part of the nearby Stourhead estate. The tower is a 49m high folly designed in 1772. It's believed to mark the site where King Alfred rallied his troops in 878.

Really cool coffee and cake spot, a little caravan with locally sourced cakes, eco friendly coffee and a really nice owner. Apparently he is there most days (less often Monday and Tuesday)

Just over half way up the gradient eases for a short distance. In the days of old, horses pulling a cart would be sent into a gallop to gain momentum for the steep section ahead. You are unlikely to see that nowadays but it is still known as "galloping plain" locally.

Closed for eating in during Covid, but open for takeaways. Good sélénographie drinks, breads, cakes and pizza.

old hunting ground...no matter how fit I was, it was always testing at the top when hitting 25%; last two ramps mean grinding it out no matter how many gears but a long recovery stretch when you hit the top to regain energy!

You might start looking at estate agent websites after meandering around Cucklington as the village and its views are jaw-dropping. Apart from far-reaching views of the patchwork countryside, you'll find a magnificent 13th-century church here too. Located between Gillingham and Wincanton, there are plenty of footpaths and lanes leading to this charming place.
