The food here is amazing, but be aware that the only way out is uphill - so don't abuse it.

Not as smooth as you might think. Over the last year the road has had major flooding and not much maintenance. That being said its a road like no other. 2.2 miles in length.

Dates from 1470 notable for its high steeple. During the English Civil War the church was damaged and the organ destroyed. The life of the local church was described by James Woodforde in his The Diary of a Country Parson. Born in Ansford where his father was the vicar. A display about his life and writings is available in the Castle Cary and District Museum. Restored by Benjamin Ferrey in the 1880s.

One of the 'Camelot Churches' of South Somerset and has been a Grade II* listed building since 1961.  Largely dates from c13th and c15th. Much restored in the 1850s and 1870s. c18th poet and satirist Charles Churchill was at one time curate at South Cadbury

King Alfred's Tower is managed by the National Trust and is part of the nearby Stourhead estate. The tower is a 49m high folly designed in 1772. It's believed to mark the site where King Alfred rallied his troops in 878.

Mells is a small pretty village in northeast Somerset. The streets feel old with several historically important buildings including the old church and manor house. The Talbot Inn is a great traditional country pub offering food, drinks and snacks from 11:00 - 23:00 Wed to Sun. The Walled Garden café and community plant nursery is open for cafe food and pizza from 11:00 - 16:00 Wed to Sun.

The Bath Arms is part of the Longleat Estate. It's a smart pub with good food and a nice outside seating area where you can keep an eye on your bike. Open 7 days a week 11:00 - 23:00 Contact number: 01985 844308

Just over half way up the gradient eases for a short distance. In the days of old, horses pulling a cart would be sent into a gallop to gain momentum for the steep section ahead. You are unlikely to see that nowadays but it is still known as "galloping plain" locally.

Mells walled garden is lovely, but the Talbot Inn is also good!

The descent of Cheddar Gorge is one of the easiest bits of any ride, but is just reward for making it up there in the first place.

You can spot Glastonbury Tor from miles around as you ride along the flat lanes in the Somerset Levels. Perched atop a hill, it's a definitive landmark of the area. It's considered to be one of the most spiritual sites in the country, especially among pagans.

Not as hard or as busy as I thought it would be... and I went on a sunny Saturday in May! The bottom is tourist heaven or hell depending on your point of view, it gets quieter when you get to the serious stuff in the middle and the top shallower section (which is lovely) is very tranquil in comparison. There's only one steep and fairly sort section... 20% max, the rest is around 10% and the top only around 5%... it's a joy... go on you'll love it!

old hunting ground...no matter how fit I was, it was always testing at the top when hitting 25%; last two ramps mean grinding it out no matter how many gears but a long recovery stretch when you hit the top to regain energy!

Once out of the gorge there are some lovely views and choices to make on your preferred route onward. Left toward the north on the cycle route or turn right and drop down toward Wells.

Good choices, wonderfully clean toilets. Nice map on the toilet wall showing what will happen to the area if/when the ice caps all melt! Gulp.

Run by Vicky & Rob Sweet - local riders know the spot and Saturday mornings see many club groups arrive. Tor 2000 run a 'Youth Ride' from Sweets at 10am on Saturdays.
