I always make time to pop in on my walks in this area as it is wonderfully calming and peaceful. I like to just sit and marvel at the talent of the architecture.

The cross crowning this small sacred monument is comparatively small and modest in relation to the entire monument. However, the cross's base, rising in Gothic form, deserves special attention. The very delicate structure, stretching skyward, looks to me a bit like someone had removed a small church steeple from the church and transplanted it onto the lawn here.

For many, known as the ‘Cathedral of Dorset’ Founded by St. Aldhelm in AD 705, Sherborne Abbey has developed from a Saxon cathedral to one of England’s most beautiful parish churches. The abbey is a Grade I listed building. It has several distinct architectural styles throughout and well worth a visit.

Bristol High Cross is a market cross which was first erected in 1373 in the centre of Bristol on the site of an earlier cross which commemorated the granting of a charter by Edward III to make Bristol a county, separate from Somerset and Gloucestershire. In 1764 it was moved to Stourhead. Often mistaken as part of the nearby church.

Just over half way up the gradient eases for a short distance. In the days of old, horses pulling a cart would be sent into a gallop to gain momentum for the steep section ahead. You are unlikely to see that nowadays but it is still known as "galloping plain" locally.

old hunting ground...no matter how fit I was, it was always testing at the top when hitting 25%; last two ramps mean grinding it out no matter how many gears but a long recovery stretch when you hit the top to regain energy!

This extraordinary church displays numerous styles of architecture, thanks to its exceptionally long history. Founded in 705 AD, the building has Saxon and Norman heritage but much of what you see today is the result of an extensive rebuild during the 15th century. Today the 'abbey' is a church, but it was once a cathedral and then an abbey.

Dorset is brimming with history and if you walk anywhere in this chalk county, you'll be tripping over something ancient. Cutt Mill is one such remnant from times past and it was originally a corn mill. There has been a mill on the site for at least 1,000 years, although likely more and possibly double that, given the Roman villa site just up the hill. Despite its dereliction, its position is tranquil and a fantastic place for watching the Stour and its resident birds from herons and moorhens to kingfishers and ducks.

Bit of a killer this one that never quite settles at a steady gradient for more than a few dozen meters making it hard to find a pace, and gets worse and steeper the further you get. But isn't that the kind of stuff that make us love cycling? Well recommended!
