10월 7, 2025, Ham Hill War Memorial and Stone Circle
However, such war memorials, which one encounters so frequently along the way, regardless of nationality, language, or name, are always a testimony – still significant and relevant today – to the horrors of war and tyranny. They therefore all have two essential functions, and this continues anew for each generation: -1- To commemorate and remember the victims -2- To remind people of the need to maintain peace

Hollow Lane is a great example of a Hollow Way, a sunken lane typical of this area of the country. These ancient lanes are cut into the landscape but we're not entirely sure why. It could be simply due to erosion by booth people and animals over 100s of years, exacerbated by water run off. They may also have been cut initially to make animal heading easier and to provide protection from the weather. What ever the cause they make for very atmospheric riding!

Situated just a small walk from Glastonbury Centre, Glastonbury Tor Hill stands at a height of 158 m… The walk to the top is steep, and may require stops, but in general terms is only a small climb. The views are breath taking, on a clear day you can see across to the Bristol Channel. The views are amplified by the low land area which can be seen in every direction.

This is an amazing climb along a lane that carves between Hamdon and Butcher's Hill. You ride between thick woodland that makes you feel like you are entering another world. The climb is steady and not too hard on the legs.

Glastonbury Tor is a hill near Glastonbury in the English county of Somerset, topped by the roofless St Michael's Tower, a Grade I listed building.[2] The entire site is managed by the National Trust and has been designated a scheduled monument.[1][3] The Tor is mentioned in Celtic mythology, particularly in myths linked to King Arthur, and has several other enduring mythological and spiritual associations. The conical hill of clay and Blue Lias rises from the Somerset Levels. It was formed when surrounding softer deposits were eroded, leaving the hard cap of sandstone exposed. The slopes of the hill are terraced, but the method by which they were formed remains unexplained. Archaeological excavations during the 20th century sought to clarify the background of the monument and church, but some aspects of their history remain unexplained. Artefacts from human visitation have been found, dating from the Iron Age to Roman eras. Several buildings were constructed on the summit during the Saxon and early medieval periods; they have been interpreted as an early church and monks' hermitage. The head of a wheel cross dating from the 10th or 11th century has been recovered. The original wooden church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1275, and the stone Church of St Michael built on the site in the 14th century. Its tower remains, although it has been restored and partially rebuilt several times.

Lovely single track trail that short cuts through between Glastonbury and Avalon Marshes. Part of cycle route 3 but a shared path so keep an eye out for walkers. There’s a memorial garden to a teenage girl at one end which always breaks my heart. It’s a nice place to stop as there are picnic tables and bike stands but I always feel so sad for the family.

Ham Hill affords wonderful views over Stoke-sub-Hamdon nestled in the countryside. The hill was quarried for local Ham Stone for many centuries and the 15-strong stone circle you find there was built by the Millennium Project to commemorate this. There is also a war memorial on the summit.
