THE BEAUTIFULLY SCULPTED GARDENS OF the Chalice Well surround Glastonbury’s most famous natural water source, the Red Spring, so called for the iron oxide it deposits in its basin. But just opposite this famous site, down a little lane at the foot of Glastonbury Tor, lies its counterpart: the White Spring.

Situated just a small walk from Glastonbury Centre, Glastonbury Tor Hill stands at a height of 158 m… The walk to the top is steep, and may require stops, but in general terms is only a small climb. The views are breath taking, on a clear day you can see across to the Bristol Channel. The views are amplified by the low land area which can be seen in every direction.

Glastonbury Tor is a hill near Glastonbury in the English county of Somerset, topped by the roofless St Michael's Tower, a Grade I listed building.[2] The entire site is managed by the National Trust and has been designated a scheduled monument.[1][3] The Tor is mentioned in Celtic mythology, particularly in myths linked to King Arthur, and has several other enduring mythological and spiritual associations. The conical hill of clay and Blue Lias rises from the Somerset Levels. It was formed when surrounding softer deposits were eroded, leaving the hard cap of sandstone exposed. The slopes of the hill are terraced, but the method by which they were formed remains unexplained. Archaeological excavations during the 20th century sought to clarify the background of the monument and church, but some aspects of their history remain unexplained. Artefacts from human visitation have been found, dating from the Iron Age to Roman eras. Several buildings were constructed on the summit during the Saxon and early medieval periods; they have been interpreted as an early church and monks' hermitage. The head of a wheel cross dating from the 10th or 11th century has been recovered. The original wooden church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1275, and the stone Church of St Michael built on the site in the 14th century. Its tower remains, although it has been restored and partially rebuilt several times.

Lovely single track trail that short cuts through between Glastonbury and Avalon Marshes. Part of cycle route 3 but a shared path so keep an eye out for walkers. There’s a memorial garden to a teenage girl at one end which always breaks my heart. It’s a nice place to stop as there are picnic tables and bike stands but I always feel so sad for the family.

A fantastic gravel trail across the Avalon marshes. Quiet in the morning but can get busy with walkers on a sunny afternoon. It’s part of national cycle route 3 so cyclists are more than entitled to use it, but bear in mind that it is a shared path and most people come here to enjoy the nature in peace. There are lots of bird watchers and if you come just before dusk you’ll see some amazing starling murmurations. Good surface of fine, hard packed gravel with a few non-threatening potholes.

Shapwick Heath nature reserve, gets pretty busy with walkers and bird watchers. Excellent compacted gravel surface with just a few puddles, and plenty of places to sit on a bench and watch the aerial display.

Visit the Glastonbury White well to fill up for water bottles. The well is occasionally open to visitors and includes a VERY glastonbury style interior. Candles, incense, singing, naked people... it’s got it all. There is a tap on the outside from which fresh spring water continuously flows. The water is famed for its healing qualities.
