Uprising against the government of Henry VI, Jack Cade, an Irishman living in Kent, organised a rebellion among local small property holders angered by high taxes and prices. He took the name John Mortimer, identifying himself with the family of Henry’s rival, the duke of York. Cade and his followers defeated a royal army in Kent and entered London, where they executed the lord treasurer. His rebellion contributed to the breakdown of royal authority that led to the Wars of the Roses.

The church was built in the 14th century on the location of a former church with the 13th century tower being incorporated into the new church. Stonemasons working on the church built a pub next door to act as their shelter when they were working on it

Ashburnham Place was a fine manor house until the mid-20th century. The landscape park with three lakes was created by the grandiose landscape architect Capability Brown. Today the property belongs to a Christian community that runs a restaurant with highly recommended organic food. The homemade bread is also very good.
