Although their foundation often dates back more than a century – many were erected after the First World War (1914 to 1918) – they are by no means mere relics of a bygone era. The message of the almost ubiquitous "War Memorials," which continue to commemorate the victims of war and tyranny in villages and towns, remains relevant today. Despite certain similar basic patterns, the design of the memorials varies from place to place. But what they all have in common is the urgent appeal to remind us – each generation anew – of the necessity of preserving peace.

As a memorial to the many dead, such monuments - usually called "war memorials" in English - are still very important today. "Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said..." says the so-called "Hymn of Simeon" (Luke's Gospel, Chapter 2, Verse 29). Very good rest stop while riding in Kent

I was surprised how much we enjoyed it! The audio guides are really interesting and we learned and experienced a lot. I would definitely come again, there is a lot to see and the big tour we chose covered everything. The shop was great too. The houses and (battle) grounds are managed by English Heritage.
