Barrington Court has an intriguing history. While the court has stood for more than 450 years, there’s evidence that people have called the area home since the Roman period. The Tudor mansion fell into disrepair until it was eventually used as a farmhouse. However, it was given a new lease of life when the Lyles restored it in the 1920s, before it was open to the public eight decades later. Public footpaths run through the gardens

Chard is a charming town located in Somerset, near the county borders of Devon and Dorset. Chard is a very notable town as it is the birthplace of powered flight. In 1848, in the town of Chard, Victorian aeronautical pioneer John Stringfellow first demonstrated that engine-powered flight was possible - and the rest is history!

Visited this cafe when setting up a community cafe ourselves. Very friendly and welcoming. Small but perfectly formed! We had a nice brunch there and they were very cycling friendly.

An atmospheric fragment of old Somerset: the estate is the vision of Colonel Lyle and his architect James Edwin Forbes. It has farm buildings, abundant flowers and orchards. National Trust property with cafe and accessible toilets.

Chard Reservoir is no longer used as a commercial reservoir but is managed as a nature reserve. A lovely, peaceful spot to stop and watch the water birds.

Built in 1842 to provide water for the local canal this is now a nature reserve and fishing lake managed by South Somerset District Council.

A wonderful Hollow Way or a sunken lane typical of this area of the country. These ancient lanes are cut into the landscape but we're not entirely sure why. It could be simply due to erosion by booth people and animals over 100s of years, exacerbated by water run off. They may also have been cut initially to make animal heading easier and to provide protection from the weather. What ever the cause they make for very atmospheric riding!

Great coffee in the cafe, and a great bike repair/sales shop as well. Crank arm came loose in middle of the ride, the chaps in the shop tightened it up, all for free.

Great food in lovely setting sit inside or outside overlooking the river and Bow bridge

My favourite section of the stopline way, an easy chilled ride, particularly stunning in the summer but monumentally busy exactly when you think it would be.

Owned by English Heritage, Muchelney Abbey lies in ruins with its extraordinary footprint still very clearly visible. While the main abbey buildings were destroyed by Henry VIII in the 16th century, the abbot’s house still stands and is in excellent condition. With stone carvings, stained-glass windows and breathtaking architecture, visiting is absolutely worth the time. The abbey also lies just off the River Parrett Trail and if you want more history, you can visit the nearby Priest’s House too, owned by the National Trust.
