Using the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of the human spirit of discovery, the origins of which can be traced back to times long past. Thanks to such a construction, a watercourse - natural or artificial - could simply replace human or animal muscle power with the power of the natural elements, for example to grind grain into corn or to press oil from fruit. There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills: * Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or * the water is guided - usually through a so-called "mill channel" - above the wheel and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.

I imagine it to be a nice little cafe selling cakes, teas and coffees. unfortunately it only opens from 10am on a saturday

Was nice to see the Hod from a distance. On a hike route I'd done Hambledon and Hod on same day, in really bad conditions. worth a go up there

The North Dorset Trailway now extends approximately 14 miles from Sturminster Newton to Spetisbury, with a section in Stalbridge they aim to link with, providing a safe route for walkers, runners, cyclists, equestrians and people with mobility scooters. The Trailway is largely made up of sections of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway which linked Bristol and Bournemouth until the 1960s.

There are documentary references to the building of "A Bridge on the River Stour adjacent to the White Mill" in the year 1175. Although the bridge you'll see today is probably a sixteenth century structure (somewhat hacked around by the Victorians). It is known, from an investigation of the foundations a few years ago, that the bridge stands on timber pilings which have themselves been carbon dated to the twelfth century. This is alleged to be the oldest bridge site in Dorset. Note the bridge warning plate "Any person wilfully damaging any part of this County Bridge will be guilty of Felony and upon conviction liable to be Transported For Life by the court"

The old hill forts offer terrific views once you get towards the top but if you are riding be prepared for plenty of pushing. It isn't flat.

Black Cactus is a very friendly cafe with delicious food. you can charge up, recharge and refresh. Nice space to park your bikes right infront too. dogs also welcome.

Beautiful Dorset countryside - rolling hills - nothing too steep

From this beautiful multi-arched stone bridge, you can enjoy views of the River Stour as it flows through Blandford Forum. The only downside is that it has a sidewalk on only one side.

This former mill is now a building of apartments. If you run by here, you'll see a weir, a bridge, and a large millpond.

The train line was removed in 1966 but this station was left. Volunteers and enthusiasts have worked here since 1997 restoring the station and laying some track in 2008. It's now a mini museum with the restored station and some rolling stock and engines. They plan to extend the track towards Sturminster Newton and eventually run a heritage railway service. The cafe and shop are open when the station is open, currently Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays 10am-4pm.

Still milling flour today, this beautiful mill is well worth taking five minutes to listen to the water. You might even be lucky enough to spot the local otter!
