This is a small section of the long-distance footpath, The North Downs Way, that runs through southern England. This particular section brushes the southern edge of the Kent Downs near the coast and is near the town of Folkestone.

Situated within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and encompassing the Folkestone to Etchinghill Site of Special Scientific Interest, Peene Quarry is distinguished by its expansive chalk grassland crowning steep slopes, offering panoramic views of the southern coastline.

Good climb just above Hythe and Folkstone. Trig point at the top to stop for a breather and take a photo.

Ethelburga, daughter of King Ethelbert and Queen Bertha of Kent, married Edwin, King of Northumbria in 625. By her influence he was converted and baptised at the place where York Minster now stands. But he was killed in battle against “the heathen” in 633, and Queen Ethelburga fled for safety to Kent. Her brother, now King Eadbald, gave her a royal property in Lyminge. Queen Ethelburga founded here a double minster or convent for men and women, becoming the first Abbess. When Ethelburga died in 647, she was regarded as a Saint and her remains were placed in the northern porticus of her church, which made the place a pilgrimage shrine.

The Channel Tunnel opened in 1994, a 31-mile (50 km) long tunnel linking England to France. One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, it's Britain's only fixed link to mainland Europe and, as of 2018, over 80 million vehicles had transited the tunnel. The Eurostar train also uses the tunnel although passengers tend to board in London's St. Pancras station.
