Just a small diversion from the delightful but popular (ie busy) drive running along the south side of Bradgate Park.

The building across the water, Pool House, is a Grade II listed building.

The first recorded reference to Groby Pool was in 1295, and there is evidence of a mill associated with Groby Pool from that time until the 1900s. The last was a saw mill in Sheet Hedges Wood.

The Old Post Office Tearooms, is next to the entrance to Bradgate Park, the start and end point of the Leicestershire Round long distance walking route. Once the Village Shop, Café, and Post Office, it transformed into a family-run tearoom offering breakfast, brunch, lunch, and handmade cakes. It’s an excellent way to mark the end of the Leicestershire Round, but bear in mind it closes at 4pm. Dogs are very welcome, and there is outside seating. There’s also a takeout counter should you wish to start your walk with a coffee in hand!

A good place to take a breather and watch the boats. Cotes Road and South Street provide a nice, quiet north - south run avoiding the A6 on the other side of the river.

Traffic lights both sides. Nasty little climb up towards the village that will take the wind out of your sails!

Thornton Reservoir is a small area of water situated on the edge of the National Forest in a peaceful and picturesque location. It offers a network of trails and footpaths around the reservoir and through the neighbouring woodland areas.

Groby Pool is believed to be the largest natural expanse of open water in Leicestershire, covering 38 acres. The unusual combination of habitats includes woodland, wet and dry grassland, marsh, reed swamp and open water, supporting a wide range of water fowl and animals.

The bridge crosses the River Soar navigation. Located only a stone's throw from the bridge is the Soar Bridge Inn, a traditional pub popular with boaters and walkers attracted by the picturesque scene.

Cropston Reservoir is a 100 acre trout fishery. The dam is 690 m long and rises to a height of 16 m at its highest point, which gives a water depth of up to 12 m. The reservoir was completed in 1870.

Rothley Station is on the Great Central Railway, the UKs only mainline heritage railway. The station has been restored to how it would have looked in 1912, down to coal fires for heating and gas lamps for lighting. Offers a choice of tea rooms. Cycles can be carried on the trains for £3.
