Formiguinhas, located in the beautiful town of Ponta do Sol, is an idyllic tourist attraction that perfectly showcases the breathtaking beauty of Cape Verde. Situated on a peninsula on Santo Antao is the charming town of Ponta do Sol (population approximately 2,100). As the town's name suggests, it enjoys more sunshine here on average than elsewhere on the island. Ponta do Sol is located in the far north of Santo Antao, away from the mountains. This means more space for the sun. Ponta do Sol is one of the oldest settlements in the southern Cape Verde Islands. The town center boasts a beautiful square with an impressively renovated town hall (1882) painted yellow. Near the central square stands a beautiful church with a freestanding bell tower, several brightly colored houses, and a few good restaurants nearby. The streets surrounding the small town center are paved. The old streets are wonderful for strolling. Besides beautiful old buildings, you'll also come across the football stadium and the cemetery. On the seaward side lies a plain. This was a former (unfinished) runway for airplanes. Walking down the cobblestone streets from the central square, you'll arrive at a small fishing port. Since the port was established near Porto Novo, Ponta do Sol's harbor has been used exclusively by local fishermen. Every day, the fishermen set out to sea in their colorful boats. Upon their return, everyone helps to lift the boats out of the water and weigh and clean the day's catch. Thanks in part to Ponta do Sol's charm and central location, it is also becoming increasingly popular with tourists and residents with second homes (emigrants). In the hills surrounding Ponta do Sol, you'll see many (concrete) buildings still under construction. During the peak season, which runs from September to April, hotels can fill up quickly. The same applies to restaurants. Reservations are recommended. Many hikers also visit Ponta do Sol during their walks to Fontainhas, Formiguinhas, and Cha de Irgreja.

You can camp here, but at the time we were here it was quiet and deserted.

A nice bar invites you to refresh yourself. There's even a pool.

Impressive crater, the walk around it to the road to Aguas das Caldeiras is also worth it.

Anyone who climbs the switchbacks to the crater like we did will be blessed to be up here! 😅 But this view back into the valley makes up for all the effort.
