As of Feb 2025, the castle is temporarily closed for restoration and has scaffold erected around it – but still an impressive sight.

Nice and easy

Great view of the castle from the bridge over the River Medway. A motte-and-bailey castle was built on this site after the Norman conquest as further defence. The castle as it looks to today was built in the 13th Century, and the mansion was added in the 18th Century. The council now use the mansion for offices, but the castle is worth a visit.

The ancestral home of the Sidney family and birthplace of the Elizabethan poet Sir Phillip Sidney, Penshurst Place is a grand manor set in beautiful gardens. I've never successfully cycled down this, the V funnels everything into it and its either covered in crap in the Summer or a dangerous mudbath in winter, enjoy!

Lots of parking, toilets and a small cafe

Great little tea house that unfortunately closes during the winter months. It is a charming little place ... if you manage to come before everyone else... It does get busy on a beautiful day, just like the rest of the village.
