Great view over the island

The Cross-Island Trek on Rarotonga leads through the middle of the island and is usually recommended in good weather. Running shoes with a good profile are sufficient; in my opinion, special hiking boots are not absolutely necessary. The route leads through dense tropical rainforest and over some very steep passages that require surefootedness and good fitness. A highlight of the hike is "The Needles", a striking rocky peak that offers breathtaking views. This is not directly on the path, but can be reached via a dead end 200 meters away. The detour to the summit of "The Needles" is challenging and can be dangerous when wet. You have to hold on to ropes and chains. At your own risk. After this detour, the path continues downhill towards the south, where it is a little less steep but still challenging.

Aitutaki is a so-called “semi-atoll” that consists of the main island of the same name and 14 other small islands (motus) nestled around the approximately 50 square kilometer lagoon. The main island on the northwestern edge of the lagoon and two of the small islands are of volcanic origin, the remaining twelve are coral islands. The lagoon, which shimmers from azure blue to turquoise to emerald green, is the highlight of Aitutaki and has the reputation of being the most beautiful in the world - even if the residents of Bora Bora in French Polynesia disagree.
