Ightham Mote is a medieval moted manor house owned and managed by the National Trust. It was built almost 700 years ago and houses a collection of interesting objects and art. The property has gardens and a wider estate which you can visit if you wish. It's paid entry unless you are a NT member. There's also a cafe and shop on site which makes it a great place to either start a run or stop at halfway. If you're running here, the most obvious loop starts at Ightham Mote, Knole or Sevenoaks station and follows the Greensand Way. There are lots of other options within the 580-acre (235 ha) estate to explore if you fancy staying local.

It's just idyllic and the cafe is not bad either

The church had previously been rebuilt in 1721 but of that building designed by James Gibbs nothing survives above ground apart from the large monument to its builder, Christopher Lord Barnard

The original moated manor on the site was called Fair Lane and belonged in the 17th century to Sir Henry Vane the Younger. In the 20th century the estate was owned by Sir Peter Cazalet who trained horses owned by the Queen Mother who was a regular overnight visitor. The current owner is Prince Khalid Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. In 2011 the Prince attempted to close a public footpath across the estate but local residents rebelled and, supported by local Ramblers, won an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate to keep it open.
