A great breakfast for the walkers, and fresh water and a free! sausage for the pooches 🐕👍🏻

one of the few bits of this part of the route with enough space for a group of people to sit on the grass between the path and the river to eat without being in the way or getting wet!

It is nice to see a boating lake, and it would be nice to see it in the summer with people using it, from he Waterways website : The Venetian Waterways and Boating Lake have been an integral part of Great Yarmouth’s seafront landscape since their construction in the 1920s. Situated at the northern end of Marine Parade, the Boating Lake was first opened in 1926, followed by the Venetian Waterways in 1928 – designed by S. P. Thompson and built as part of a relief work scheme for the local unemployed after the First World War.T

Great area for small children. There is a small stretch of water between the sand and sea where children can play in the water without being out in the sea.

During November and December parts of the beach is closed due to the grey seal pupping season Please keep dogs on leads and look out for seals pups in the dunes These are wild animals and may attack if threatened Wardens are present during day light to guide people

In the woods of East Somerton are the ruins of St Mary’s church, with glassless windows, tumbling walls, and a tower where you can look up into the open sky. From the 15th-century, St Mary’s went from serving its own parish to becoming part of the larger parish of West Somerton. It fell into disuse in the 17th-century and has remained abandoned. The most striking feature is a tree in the centre of the ruins, known as “The Witch’s Leg.”

Well worth looking round this exceptional very old church

A truly magical place, St Mary's Church has been wrapped back up in nature since it was abandoned in the 17th century. The size of the oak tree that rises up in the centre of the ruins tells you just how long it has been since worshippers set foot inside. Legend has it that the tree grew from the wooden leg of a witch who was buried here.

Running along the footpath through the dunes and you really feel like you are a million miles from everywhere. Expansive views and golden sand. Beautiful.

A stunning place to run and certainly somewhere to blow out the cobwebs in winter. Winterton Beach is a long stretch of golden sand backed by dunes. Between October and March you may spot seals so please ensure any movement does not disturb them. There may be pups and seals giving birth. Please also keep to the footpaths to help limit damage to the fragile sand dunes.

Winterton Beach has an unspoiled sandy shoreline, sand dunes, and the opportunity to witness seal colonies in their natural habitat. The road leading up to the beach has suffered dramatic erosion at the end. There's a great cafe called Norfolk's Edge right next to the beach.

Excellent beach cafe serving food from airstream food trucks.

The fact that Caister-on-sea beach is less popular with tourists than Great Yarmouth is definitely your gain! Backed by sand dunes the beach stretches for miles and it's likely you will enjoy this sandy beach mostly to yourself. An historic lifeboat station here dates back to 1791.

Winterton Dunes is a nature reserve that’s home to much wildlife. Keep a lookout for tern, Natterjack toad and seal colonies. Bird watchers especially will be richly rewarded here.

The dunes keep collapsing during storms, so please keep to known footpaths to help protect the dune system habitat. Also, if you visit between October and March, please keep your dogs on leads and seals may be on the beach giving birth/raising their pups.

Backdropped by sand dunes and the glistening sea, Caister beach stretches for miles and miles. Less popular than its neighbouring Great Yarmouth beach, you can enjoy this sandy beach mostly to yourself. At the beach, you will find a historic lifeboat station that dates back to 1791. You can learn about its history at the visitor center opposite.

Winterton Beach boasts vast golden sand and clean and gentle sea. It’s backed by rolling dunes which have been designated as a national nature reserve. The stretch of sand between the dunes and the sea gives a lovely uncrowded and open atmosphere. If you’re lucky, you might even see seals on this beach.

Managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Martham Broad is a magnificent place to visit. The nature reserve is home to breeding birds including bittern, bearded tit, common tern, Cetti’s warbler and marsh harrier. Stately common cranes use the reserve and the site is excellent for swallowtails and many other invertebrates. Otters and Chinese water deer are relatively easily observed here, too.
