Beautiful park full of woodland trails and a serpentine lake, lots to see and explore with a historical chapel and ornamental bridge, cycle hire available too in the park.

Located between Mansfield and Bolsover, this picturesque woodland is rapidly developing into one of the most attractive wildlife sites in the region. With its mixture of mature broadleaf woodland, newly planted trees, large open meadows and a scenic wetland valley, Shirebrook Wood offers something for everybody.

As a former pit top site, Shirebrook Wood has been reclaimed & redeveloped with large-scale planting of native shrubs and trees and the whole site has been totally landscaped, The Derbyshire side (West) has been turned into an Industrial Estate.

After or before the Play Area take a walk all around the lake and read the information boards for some very interesting facts. Keeps the kids occupied :)

CLAIMED TO BE THE LEGENDARY location where Robin Hood met the feisty Friar Tuck in the famous folktale, the overgrown remains of a 12th-century moat, lodge, and holy well complex persist in this soggy corner of Sherwood Forest. Fountain Dale’s ancient moat is an impressive waterlogged ditch, 40 feet wide, enclosing what was once a large rectangular artificial island. The feature dates to at least 1251, when the moated island was the site of a hunting lodge, the vestiges of which remain hidden beneath centuries of mud and undergrowth. To date, little archaeological investigation at the site has been carried out. This said, the remains of the medieval manse are likely to be well preserved, having remained unusually undisturbed. The moat and its structures are listed as a Scheduled Monument of National Importance by the public heritage organization Historic England.

Clumber Park was once the home of the Duke of Newcastle but the mansion was demolished in 1938. It's now a beautiful estate of parkland, heath, woods and the lake. It's now managed by the National Trust. The parkland is free to access but there are paid entry or members areas. NT cafes, ice cream van and shop on site. There are also over 20miles of traffic free cycle ways on the estate, most are better suited for a mountain or touring bike but they are flat and not technical so if you don't mind getting a bit muddy...

Miles of relatively traffic-free roads to explore this leafy parkland. A great place to picnic on a warm summer day, but a lovely quiet area at any time of year.

A beautiful limestone gorge and world heritage site, Creswell Crags and the caves found here are rich in natural history. As well as the remains of many prehistoric animals, the gorge is also the site of the earliest known remains of modern humans in Britain. One of the caves is named after the legendary Robin Hood, who was often in the region. Today, a nearby visitor centre offers more information and guided walks around the area.

With a cafe on site and a number of gravel trails, paths and ponds it's a great place to visit

Fans of English folklore heed this well, for it was at Fountain Dale where the first meeting of Robin Hood and Friar Tuck took place. Legend goes that they fought at the moat, the remains of which are sadly all but gone. Interestingly, Sir Walter Scott wrote his famous novel Ivanhoe here. The novel is partly to thank for the modern perception of many of the principal characters of Robin Hood folklore, including the Prince of Thieves himself.

Pleasley Coillery still standing much as it did when it was a working Coal Mine with the worker huts and units that have now been turned into a cafe and a bit of a museum with photographs of and items of what the coal mining industry was like. Cafe is very reasonably priced but take cash.
