A raised platform crosses the wet meadow area. Here you will find the Yellow Iris in summer.

Cows sometimes graze here which encourages a variety of wild flowers to grow.

Here there are beds of reeds up to 2m high which are especially important for birds.

There are two species of newt in this pond: great-crested and smooth. These amphibians use the pond to breed and can often be seen moving around amongst the plants on bright days. The eggs are neatly placed inside a rolled up leaf for protection. The pond is regularly visited by dragon- and damselflies, sometimes ducks and moornens or the odd occasion! Source: Local signage

Caught this Heron standing fishing in the middle of Washout Pit.

Here the Heron Trail follows the Ouse Valley Way.

Off the main track to the left you take a narrow wooden walkway out to the hide which has great views over Heronry South Lake as well as Heronry North Lake.

This area of rough grassland interspersed with Hawthorn and Dog Rose bushes provides ideal feeding and nesting areas for Nightingales. Between the end of April and the beginning of June male Nightingales sing to attract a mate.

Haydon Hive overlooks the southern end of Heronry South Lake. From here you can se the Cormorants roosting in the trees on the opposite bank.

Great visitor's centre with public toilets, outside and inside seating areas, small second-hand book shop and very reasonably priced cafe. Friendly staff.

This pleasant paved pathway between St Neots and Monk's Hardwick Farm is surrounded by gorgeous countryside. From the footpath you will be able to see the 16th century manor house of Henry Cromwell, second cousin of Oliver Cromwell who was a famous politician and soldier.

This is a gorgeous little lake situated in the Paxton Pits Nature Reserve in St Neots. There is a wooded trail that runs along the shore where you can catch fantastic views across the water, you may even spot some local waterbirds too.

Hail Lane is a byway linking the B1046 near Abbotsley with the Medieval Village of Weald and the A428, Cambridge Road. It is narrow and green with plenty of vegetation so it is worth looking out for butterflies during the summer.

The footpath between St Neots and Monks Hardwick is paved, so provides an easy walk out of the town. On a summers day the wheat fields have a real English countryside feel. The Manor House of Monks Hardwick, which can been seen from the footpath, was the home of Henry Crowell in the 16th century, second cousin of Oliver Cromwell.

Myriad habitats can be found at Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, with beautiful lakes, riverside, meadow, reedbed, scrub and woodland. The visitor centre offers refreshments, facilities and friendly expertise. Kingfishers and nightingales are a common sight and overwintering wildfowl visit during the colder months. In spring and summer, wildflowers, dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies create a vibrant environment.
