Gunwade Lake at Ferry Meadows is a fantastic spot for a flat and scenic run. If you're a runner, I highly recommend checking it out! The path is wide and well-maintained, and you'll often see lots of other runners and walkers, making it a really friendly and motivating place to be. It’s perfect for working on your pacing and enjoying the beautiful views. #running #FerryMeadows #GunwadeLake #runnertip

Good stopping point on this route, shaded by trees , time to cool down, take a sip from your drink bottle, munch a bar, and contemplate the meaning of John Clare's words. Meditate upon his greatest wish to be at home with family and friends as he anticipates his death but note his optimism when, though linking death to winter, he draws on the symbolism of the evergreen laurel and plays with the word "leaves". And so by now it is time for you to leave and hope you are not to be further occupied waiting for a train at the Helpston crossing. Happy Cycling - its lovely country.

Yes, it is pretty nice, and an interesting high street rather than all clone stores as well.

Part of Nene Park, Ferry Meadows is a hive of activity and relaxation. Gunwade Lake, Overton and Lynch Lake make for a beautiful setting for a run, not far from the centre of Peterborough. There is a cafe, bus stops and car parking so it also makes for a good start/end point for a run along the River Nene.

Among the many architectural highlights, go to Rutland Terrace (see map) to see a classic Georgian terrace, and the Meadows is a great place to sit on a bench or the grass by the river and people-watch.

The rather grand Bottle Lodges form the gateway to Burghley House, the original route for horse and coaches coming in off the Great North Road.

The historic Lincolnshire town of Stamford's old timber-framed houses and charming limestone buildings stand proud on the banks of the River Welland. It's situated where the counties of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland meet and it is the end point of the Jurassic Way long-distance trail. The nearby Burghley House and grounds – designed by the famous Capability Brown – make for an interesting day out, while a walk along the river and up to the village of Easton on the Hill is also gorgeous.

A few highlights in Helpston village. Phone box library, buttercross (folk would lay wares for sale on the steps), and the birthplace of and memorial to John Clare, Poet (13 July 1793 – 20 May 1864). (Wikipedia) The son of a farm labourer, he became known for his celebrations of the English countryside and sorrows at its disruption.[1] His poetry underwent major re-evaluation in the late 20th century: he is now often seen as a major 19th-century poet.[2] His biographer Jonathan Bate called Clare "the greatest labouring-class poet that England has ever produced. No one has ever written more powerfully of nature, of a rural childhood, and of the alienated and unstable self."
