What a great View! Well worth the slog up the hill!

It does get busy around the visitors' centre and the Gruffalo trail. However, if you ride up Pale Hill and follow the perimeter of the forest, there are plenty of quiet trails to explore. Keep your eyes peeled for single tracks going through the forest, there lots of off-the-beaten-path routes to follow if you look for them.

This memorial, erected in a prominent location, towers high above the landscape of Frodsham Hill, about two kilometers from the banks of the Mersey, which flows past Liverpool before reaching its estuary. Despite its beautiful location and fantastic views (weather permitting), it has a serious significance: it commemorates the many victims of war and tyranny claimed by the two terrible world wars in the first half of the last century. Thus, each of these WAR MEMORIALS, which hikers encounter time and again in so many places, has a message that remains relevant today: to remember the need to preserve peace!

Spike Island is a park in Widnes, Halton, North-West England. Spike Island was the site of the famous outdoor concert by the Stone Roses on May 1990. Created in 1833, it had the world's first rail-to-ship dock. Now repurposed for recreation with parkland, wetlands, woodland and footpaths.

A great way to traverse to the north of Chester. About 13km of traffic free with just a few well-behaved pedestrians and dog walkers to avoid. the Greenway is fully tarmaced although in places it is breaking up and in autumn there are a lot of leaves and a bit of mud so some care is required. Make sure you have a bell to warn other users and slow down.

Improvements have been made to the towpath between Chester and Ellesmere Port, starting in 2020 and due to finish in 2023: 'The project will see the upgrade of three sections of towpath, 4.7km in total, along the canal between Chester and Ellesmere Port, which are part of National Cycle Routes 45 and 70. Made famous by a Stone Roses concert in 1990 and subsequent film of the same name, Spike Island lies between the Sankey Canal and the Mersey estuary. The man-made island was at the centre of the British chemical industry during the industrial revolution, home to the world's first rail-to-ship dock in 1833 and the first chemical factory in 1848. Since 1975, the island has been regenerated for public recreation with woods, parks and woodland.

Nice long straight

Busy with walkers (some of them entirely unaware that anybody else exists) so please proceed with caution and give pedestrians (even the dozy ones) plenty of warning and priority. 👍

It can be busy on the canal from Boughton through to Chester University Campus. Take it very easy and watch out for the surface on the older bridges which can contain raised brick ridges installed to give the bargees purchase when manhandling horse-drawn boats through. Once clear of the city there are some quite fast sections - but again take care on bridges where there are often pedestrian access points - slow down. Another thing to look out for is anglers rods/ poles which they might slide back across the tow path unexpectedly. A bell is a really useful accessory!

Really good east/west route across north of Chester. Like any urban area, it tends to get busy with walkers/joggers and dog walkers at weekends, but weekdays are a lot less busy. Very good surface,with plenty of on/off access points throughout.
