6월 8, 2025, Sankey Valley Greenway and The Ferry Tavern

Sankey Valley Park is a public park in Warrington, Cheshire. It occupies part of the Sankey Valley, and the main park itself covers over 1½ miles between Sankey Bridges in the south and Callands in the north. The valley follows the course of Sankey Brook and the now disused Sankey Canal. The park is enjoyed by walkers, cyclists and anglers, and the central section of the park is family orientated with children's play features, a maze and lawn areas. Bewsey Old Hall (and the Maltings Public House) sit on the edge of the central section of the park. The Trans Pennine Trail passes around 500 yards (460 m) from the southern tip of the park. This memorial, erected in a prominent location, towers high above the landscape of Frodsham Hill, about two kilometers from the banks of the Mersey, which flows past Liverpool before reaching its estuary. Despite its beautiful location and fantastic views (weather permitting), it has a serious significance: it commemorates the many victims of war and tyranny claimed by the two terrible world wars in the first half of the last century. Thus, each of these WAR MEMORIALS, which hikers encounter time and again in so many places, has a message that remains relevant today: to remember the need to preserve peace!

The Sankey Canal opened in 1757, following the valley along the Sankey Brook, however was abandoned between 1931 and 1963. The canal has been under restoration since 1985 with the formation of the Sankey Canal Restoration Society. The trail then enters the linear Sankey Valley Park, a lovely green corridor, that has links to the Trans-Pennine Trail and follows a stretch of Sankey Canal and Sankey Brook. Along the way you will pass through woodlands, farmlands, and parkland with scenic paths and chance to spot some wildlife as you wind to Carr Mill where you can enjoy some refreshments. Returning to the start will require more than one bus so check schedules before heading out. While for the most part the paths are well-surfaced but care is needed in wetter conditions when sections can be muddy and slippery. There are also some stairs along the route.

The Trans Pennine Trail is a coast-to-coast route across the entire breadth of England from Southport to Hornsea. It is well signposted and a walk or cycle could use all or part of the Trail in either direction. Some sections are also suitable for horse riding. The Mersey section follows the routes of many of the areas historic transport links: the disused Timperley-Garston and Cheshire Lines railways, the Manchester Ship Canal, the Runcorn-Latchford (Black Bear) Canal, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and the St Helens Canal. Although it is now disused, the St Helens Canal used to be known as the Sankey Canal and was the first canal of the industrial revolution. It was built to transport coal to the chemical industries in Liverpool. These industries subsequently expanded and spread back along the canal to St Helens itself.

Spike Island was the site of the famous outdoor concert by the Stone Roses on May 1990. Created in 1833, it had the world's first rail-to-ship dock. Now repurposed for recreation with parkland, wetlands, woodland and footpaths.

Blakemere Moss at Delamere Forest is a reclaimed wetland area. The Moss was originally formed from two kettle holes (water filled hollows formed by a detached mass of glacial ice melted in situ towards the end of the last ice age). Delamere Forest is made up of more than 100 peatland basins and includes several sites of rare 'quaking' bogland, a phenomenon in which sphagnum mosses form a carpet above peaty water that appears to tremble when trodden on. The area was drained from the 1800's, supposedly by prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars and planted with trees, (mainly oak and Scot's Pine) between 1793-1815 to provide timber for shipbuilding. The Forestry Commission planted the moss with pine and western hemlock during the 1940s, which proved uneconomic. In the late 1990's the Commission allowed the area to re-flood again naturally.

10월 15, 2022, Spike Island Park

Made famous by a Stone Roses concert in 1990 and subsequent film of the same name, Spike Island lies between the Sankey Canal and the Mersey estuary. The man-made island was at the centre of the British chemical industry during the industrial revolution, home to the world's first rail-to-ship dock in 1833 and the first chemical factory in 1848. Since 1975, the island has been regenerated for public recreation with woods, parks and woodland.

The Trans Pennine Trail is a fully waymakred, mainly traffic-free route for cyclists, walkers, runners and horse riders. It runs for 215 miles (346 km) coast-to-coast between Southport and Hornsea. Additional sections between Leeds and Chesterfield, with a spur to York and a spur to Kirkburton, bring the total distance to around 370 miles (595km) of glorious Pennine adventures.

Blakemere Moss is a flooded area of Delamere Forest. The lake is rich in biodiversity and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is a great place for birdwatching and is home to species such as greylags, Canada geese, black-headed gulls, coots, mallards, and lapwings. The area was drained in the 1800s, supposedly by prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars, and planted with trees. It was turned back into a lake in the 1990s and tree stumps still poke through the water’s surface.
