Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, honored here with a monument – known to many as "Mahatma Gandhi" (the nickname means "great soul" in Sanskrit) – is one of the greatest figures of the Indian subcontinent. He was born in 1869 and assassinated in 1948. His great concern – or rather, his life's work – was to achieve India's independence from Great Britain. Unlike many other Indians who pursued the same goal with violent activities, Gandhi was an uncompromising advocate of nonviolent resistance. Tragically, he was assassinated for this reason; at the time of his death, he had been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
