"Hole in the Wall" Heritage, Steps - Steep Steps ! Please Take Care ! You are welcome to use these historic steps built at the same time as the Macclesfield Canal in 1830. Please be aware they are steep and there are 43 so you need to take care when using them and do so at your own risk. Please use the hand rails which are modern and are provided for your safety. Aqueduct Cottage at the top of these steps in the past was used as a resting place for the "boatmen" on the canal and had a stabling facility for the ponies that towed the barges. You can walk along the towpath north to Poynton and south to Macclesfield. Please enjoy our industrial heritage.

This Ground was donated to the people of Bollington by the Greg family in 1901. 'The Gregs were wealthy cotton manufacturers, and the family was very religious. Samuel Greg was renowned for his advanced social thinking and wanted to create the perfect mix of employers and workers. He really believed that, under the right conditions, everyone could live in harmony.'

Then, during the war, they started issuing us with rope-soled sandals. You couldn't wear shoes because the floor was just like an oil slick - oiling all those spindles’. One famous Bollingtonian Terry Waite was born at No.60 Wellington Road, opposite the Waterhouse. Waite was the Assistant for Anglican Communion Affairs for the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, in the 1980s. As an envoy for the Church of England, he travelled to Lebanon to try to secure the release of four hostages, including the journalist John McCarthy. He was himself kidnapped and held captive from 1987 to 1991. After his release he wrote Taken on Trust (1994), a memoir about his experiences, and became involved in humanitarian causes and charitable work.

In the 1950s a place had been desperately needed for Bollington's disabled children and the mill's gatehouse subsequently housed the Bollington Spastic Clinic. It was a daunting task but one that Bollington took to its heart. Within weeks, Mr. lan Oliver of the Mill offered us the brand-new nursery that had been built for his employers' children, as they preferred to stay in the building already in use. Slowly the children thrived and everyone, even though some were terribly disabled, blossomed in the love and care they received.' The Waterhouse Mill was demolished in 1962 but The Waterhouse, home of the Oliver family and now the Bollington Medical Centre.

A steep climb or decent but worth it

Adelphi Mill in Bollington was constructed in 1856 by brothers George and Martin Swindells, expanding on their father's existing cotton mill business, Clarence Mill. Initially spun cotton, the mill later transitioned to silk and then man-made fibers. It closed in 1975, and now houses a variety of businesses, accessible from Grimshaw Lane.

This is a lovely, beautiful walk along the Macclesfield Canal in Bolington. Here in Bollington Wharf  you can see colourful canal barges moored up, walk along a good footpath, and enjoy many access points to the canal from the town. Bollington is nestled in the western foothills of the Pennine range and is a great place to visit in its own scenic right, being bordered by the hills of the Peak District.

This is a small but impressive waterfall on the River Dean. It is in a beautiful setting at the lower end of Clough Pool. It has a certain amount of man-made influence, as the top of it appears to be built on to a natural waterfall to create the mill pond above it. It was used by Ingersley Clough Mill back in the nineteenth century. This is simply a delightful scenic spot.

A battle was fought in this field - Bonnie Prince Charlie on his way back to Scotland. A man who lived there found a stabbing dagger in his garden.

A mill was in the field, it burnt down in 1860, apparently it started with arson. It was a fluffing mill - straightening wool, they used to put it on spindles that had teasels, for fluffing all the wool up. They had a 27ft waterwheel.

With its green, sloping fields and wide vistas, Andrew's Knob makes for a fine part of any walk in this part of the Peak District, while its rude sounding name will always provide a chuckle. Expert views across of farmland and moors, as well as the sight of an abandoned stone quarry.

Expect wonderful views across the Peak District from the trig point on Sponds Hill. The summit is on the Gritstone Trail, a 35-mile (56 km) route through Cheshire's Peak District. From here, it's just a short walk to the Bowstones and the Alan Monkhouse Memorial on Higher Moor.
