Harnessing the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of human discovery, whose origins can be traced back to ancient times. The Lathkill flows entirely over limestone, and as such used to become dry in the summer and during periods of low rain. The Victorians prized the river for its clarity and trout fishing, so they built 12 weirs to hold the water and maintain the fishing.
