The amazing Castle Acre, mainly prodigious lumps and bumps now but you can get a real feel for the sheer scale of the place how it must projected power and authority for Normans to their sometimes rebellious Saxon subjects.

The fantastic bailey gate here reminds me of a similar specimen I saw in Belgium at Veurne. Not far from here is the Red Lion Hostel which is run by a 90 year old lady called Alison, wonderful place to stay if you get the chance.

Excellent cafe/tearoom, for eat in or takeaway on the benches outside the front or opposite on the green. Open 10am-3.30pm every day in spring/summer (kitchen closes 2.30pm), less in winter.

Best view of the impressive earthworks and remaining walls of the ruined castle.

Great location, overlooking the green and the large village pond.

Tucked away down a little lane by the side of the church, but worth finding.

Superb former small medieval town, now just a village, but with scenic streets and buildings, a medieval gatehouse, castle and priory (all now ruined), as well as a very nice cafe and pub.

Visited this cafe. Nice food and people.

On a Saturday around 15:45, I was told that it in fact was the only place open selling drinks, snacks, and the like.

If you are coming from South Acre heading up to High Street, you need to pass through the gate to get to the castle ruins. I missed them on my direct route to the Peddar's Way (northbound).

Fantastic cake and coffee with really friendly service. Castle Acre is the first viable pitstop along the Peddars Way after leaving Thetford/ Knettishall Heath.

This fantastically well preserved motte and bailey castle is free to enter and explore. It was built shortly after the Norman Conquest in the 11th century by the first William de Warenne, a close associate of William the Conqueror.

All Saints Church dates from at least the 12th century. Until 1981, the tower was largely complete, having been turned into a folly in the 17th century. Sadly, it suddenly collapsed leaving what we can still see today. The lost medieval village of Godwick is also on this site and is open to the public for free with information boards providing more information about the village streets and buildings that you can see in the landscape. As there's not an awful lot on The Peddars Way, Castle Acre Post Office makes a good stock up stop. There's also a fish and chip shop next door.

Good stop location on The Peddars Way

The Peddars Way follows the route of the old Roman road starting in Knettishall Hall in Suffolk. The Peddars Way is 73 kilometres long and ends at the Norfolk coast at Hunstanton. The route takes it name from the Latin "Pedester", which means on foot.

Good fish and chips 🍟 shop. But beware it accepts cash only. However there is a Spar and Post Office next door.
