The more scenic alternative to the modern road bridge on the adjacent B1062. A popular swim and picnic spot in the summer.

Super cafe!! Suitable for cyclists. The track is about 100 yards and fine to bike down. Unless you have 10k superbike

8월 23, 2023, Kett's Oak
Listed as one of the '50 Great British Trees', the oak was reputedly where Robert Kett addressed a meeting which resulted in 'Kett's Rebellion' against enclosure of common land and rising living costs. It didn't end well: the Ketts and other rebels were later hung here. Avoid the busy main road and use the cycle path which runs parallel to it just behind the tree.

Well set up for the cycling crowds with proper saddle rail bike parking (no scratching your frame against a stand, or bending your spokes in a wheel holder). Only downside is needing to cross grass or gravel to reach the cafe. Fairly limited opening hours so best for a lunch stop.

Only the outer earthwork bank is visible from the road but still a very impressive feature.

9월 5, 2022, Venta Icenorum Roman Town
Venta Icenorum, ("Market-place of the Iceni") was the largest Roman town in East Anglia. It came to fame as the capital city of the Iceni tribe led by perhaps the famous queen, Boudica. The town is thought to have come into being around 60-61 AD after the tribe’s revolt against Roman rule. Venta Icenorum is one of only three towns in the UK from the Roman era that weren’t sacked, destroyed or built over by more modern towns and cities.

The interior of this church looks rather modern, but St Peter has a lot of history on offer. Unusually the plain, low parapet on this tower has twelve sides to it! The round tower has been built with very clear courses of flints in its lower section, (perhaps 11th century), then a tall section of smaller flints, and the upper section with the belfry made of random flints. This top stage was probably rebuilt in the 15th century. Below the south-east nave window appears to be an early flint quoin, which perhaps marks the extent of the first 11th century church here. The whole church is supported by hefty buttresses, mostly made of red brick. The chancel dates from the 14th century, with curvilinear tracery in the east window, though this was replaced in the 19th century. A great place to canoe from if heading into Bungay and the variousMills and maltings. Heading out towards Earsham its a little shallow so I'd recommend plastic boats only.

The oldest concrete bridge in Great Britain, Homersfield bridge has one foot in Suffolk and one in Norfolk as it crosses the River Waveney. A grade II listed structure, this charming span is a lovely place to pause and admire the river and it chuckles along its wandering path. Built in 1869, it’s made of concrete and has a wrought iron frame within. It was restored in the 90s and now hosts only foot and bike traffic.

The Tas valley around Shotesham and Stoke holy cross is pleasant cycling. Good walks around the area too. I often go this way then on to the pretty village of Brooke, then the small town of Loddon, after that I’m touring the Norfolk Broads. It’s a nice route and avoids main roads.

Quite a nice place to get in to the water if you have a plastic canoe as the water is shallow. The Black Swan pub or The Dirty Duck as its known by the locals is a stones throw away too and a quite excellent pub
