Newstead Abbey, located in Nottinghamshire, England, originally served as an Augustinian priory. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it was converted into a private residence. Today, it is most renowned as the ancestral home of Lord Byron. The priory of St. Mary of Newstead, established by King Henry II of England around 1170, was a house for Augustinian Canons. Despite its present name, Newstead was never an abbey but rather a priory.

1월 30, 2024, The Forest Stone, Lyndhurst
The Forest Stone, Lyndhurst was the central pillar of the Old Market House in Mansfield where the court of Swainmote was held before the Verderers of Sherwood Forest. The pillar was placed at the spot on the N side of Harlow Wood where the participants in the Swainmote Court met, before the court, to hear those matters affecting the forest which were to come before the court when it sat in Mansfield. The pillar, known as The Forest Stone, was placed at its present position in 1752. It had formed part of the Med Market or Moot Hall in Mansfield and was used to mark the site presumably because of that building's historical association with the Swainmote Court. It has been restored and a modern inscription added c.1952 but occupies the original site.

Entry to Newstead Abbey from Ravenshead / Nottingham Rd side there is a sign showing a charge for bikes as well as cars. However, just cycle through, even if the attendant is collecting money from car driver's. I've been through many times never challenged. If challenged say you're just passing through to Annesley!

12월 24, 2022, Fountain Dale Ponds
CLAIMED TO BE THE LEGENDARY location where Robin Hood met the feisty Friar Tuck in the famous folktale, the overgrown remains of a 12th-century moat, lodge, and holy well complex persist in this soggy corner of Sherwood Forest. Fountain Dale’s ancient moat is an impressive waterlogged ditch, 40 feet wide, enclosing what was once a large rectangular artificial island. The feature dates to at least 1251, when the moated island was the site of a hunting lodge, the vestiges of which remain hidden beneath centuries of mud and undergrowth. To date, little archaeological investigation at the site has been carried out. This said, the remains of the medieval manse are likely to be well preserved, having remained unusually undisturbed. The moat and its structures are listed as a Scheduled Monument of National Importance by the public heritage organization Historic England.

Good challenge if you're heading uphill. Mixed (sand, large pebbles, mud) surface adds to the fun!

2월 7, 2022, The Druid Stone
THE DRUID STONE is a natural rock formation with a narrow, manmade passage cut through its centre. It rises anomalously from otherwise gently undulating agricultural land close to the village of Blidworth, Nottinghamshire, in the heart of Sherwood Forest. Composed of a conglomerate of pebbles and sand bound together with limestone, the Druid Stone, also called the “Altar Stone,” stands over 13 feet (4 metres) high in a field of cows, sheep and alpacas. Formed by an eroded glacial deposit, the monolith dates back thousands of years, possibly used as a Druidical altar, though there’s no evidence to back that up.

With lots of Fire Trails and single track there’s plenty to explore or you could use it as part of a longer route as the trails branch off into multiple local towns but as the Woodland has no official car park you’ll have to figure that part out for yourself

This is a lovely small wooden area. I was surprised to spot ,after hearing the woodpecker working away looking for grubs and insects. Even more surprising was another landing on the tree next to the other one, so I'm guessing this must be a great spot for woodpeckers. Shame I never took a photo as well as the video I took. All in all, a lovely nature spot.
