The church, dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch stands on a rise above the village, with recorded evidence of a moat and with the former large parsonage house and manor house in close proximity. In the early years of the 13th century the presence of a priest is recorded and the earliest extant fabric of the body of the church has been dated to the 14th century.

Great, easy going trail for all abilities. Well maintained.

The trail is 7.5 miles and built on the former railway line of the Midland Railway. It stretches from Southwell to Bilsthorpe and passes the villages of Farnsfield, Kirklington and Maythorne. You can walk, cycle or horse ride along the trail and there are a number of free car parks to allow access.

Formerly one of the Archbishop’s deer parks and in the shadow of the Minster, you will find the delightful War Memorial Recreation Ground. As well as being the venue for several sporting activities, including tennis, football and bowls, the park is popular for easy strolls, picnics, a small nature reserve and childrens’ play areas.

Great view looking towards Lincolnshire, on a good day you can see Lincs Cathedral.

A nice gravel track that is good for running, riding or walking along. This path is quite undulating and has some great views over the local area.

This beautiful wood pasture is a reserve managed by the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. Its mixture of grassland, scrub and ancient oaks are inhabited by a variety of bird, insect and plant life, making it one of the wildest patches of countryside in the county.

Well made gravel track linking Bilsthorpe to the Southwell Trail.

Heading into Eakring past the wind turbine and the Mompesson Cross adds a slight hill but reveals expansive views of the fairly flat terrain that surrounds Eaking. The gravel track is a worthwhile route into the small village of just 400 people. It actually had the UK's first commercial oil well but these days it's mainly agriculture. Keep an eye out for the Cross just before you reach the farm and the entrance to Eakring – it's in memory of a reverend who prevented the plague from spreading much further from Eyam.

Virtually traffic-free, this gated estate is now home to small businesses and a cafe. A beautiful narrow lane takes you from Farnsfield to the terribly busy A617. From there, just nip over the road in a break in the traffic and take the lane called Kirklington Road that's slightly to the left of the exit to Hexgreave Hall. The estate dates back seven centuries to 1240AD and was originally conceived as a gift to the Archbishop of York. There are still lots of deer roaming the grounds.
