The figure of "Robin Hood"—who famously takes from the rich and gives to the poor—is by no means proven to be a historical figure, but has been retold over and over again for many centuries. When the Derwent reservoir is full, the water flows out through the 'plugholes' at the southern end. A mesmerising spectacle when there's a lot of water flowing and can be enhanced by a great sunrise.

Lovely part of the river but impassable in December. A number of the stones completely submerged.

Stanage Edge is located to the north of Hathersage and gets very busy at times with hikers, it is also popular with rock climbers. It offers great views of the Dark Peak moorlands and the Hope Valley. The gritstone edge stretches for approximately 4 miles.

Rather than overflowing the Dam wall, as the Derwent Reservoir further up, there are two plugholes, one either shore of the reservoir next to the Dam. When these are (over) flowing water they are used to produce electricity. The water travels under the Dam and is funneled back into the Derwent River

Robin Hood’s Cave is concealed in the cliff face at Stanage Edge. It is believed that Robin Hood and his merry men took shelter here.

The stones were partially submerged after rainfall, so we ended up walking through the knee deep water! The stoned were very slippery

The stepping stones are pretty submerged and uncrossable after any sort of rainfall, and looked like they actually hadn’t been above water in quite some time! (April 2024)

Beautiful view of the plug holes or shaft spillways running due to high levels in the reservoir.
