My favourite spot there admiring the nature and the birds

The Nottingham canal is a hidden gem in this area! Relatively quiet compared to other similar trails. Great to cycle along and forget all your worries.

Path up to the viaduct which can be cycled across - eventually also we should be able to cycle down the other side - but works are still in progress on the path and the Visitors Centre.

Just downstream of Elvaston Castle, the River Derwent flows over a wide, stepped weir with broad impressive cascades. The surrounding wetlands are rich in wildlife, with chances to spot kingfishers, ducks, and even leaping salmon when conditions are right.

Such a lovely spot, with a choice of some welcome refreshments from the multiple establishments dotted around the lock.

Bennerley Viaduct is currently only accessed from the west end (the canal side) with construction work to build a new access ramp at the east end. There's no way to cross the viaduct until this work is done, with no apparent completion date. To cross the river and canal you need to detour slightly to the north along some small but rideable gravel tracks. It's doable on 28mm tyres.

Shipley Country Park is not that far from Derby, close to the Nottingham border. It offers 700 acres of attractive, varied landscape full of lakes, wildflower meadows, woodland, and gentle hills, The park has 20 miles (32 km) of well maintained footpaths for walking, cycling, and horse riding.

Rather impressive (probably more so when there's been some rain!) weir on the Derwent river - worth a stop 🚵‍♂️👍

The Nottingham Canal originally travelled a distance of 14 miles (22.5 km) from the Cromford Canal to the River Trent at Nottingham, but most of it is now in a variety of various states of use and preservation, with only a 2.5 miles (4 km) section through the centre of Nottingham still used by boats. The remainder of the canal towpath is used for a variety of recreational activities, including cycling.

Now (July 2024) reopened after flood damage and refurbishment. Still good. Takes cash and card.

This is now tarmacked from Derby all the way to Borrowash.

The national tramway museum. From outside it looked like a very nice tourist attraction with fully working trams. Dogs are welcome.

Good hard packed gravel between the two tow path routes, goes under the railway and over the river Erewash with views of Bennerley viaduct

Beautiful off road trails on shared paths

Nice cafe with friendly staff. Good mid walk stops while exploring the local reservoirs and Shipley Country Park. Open Fri: 9:30 - 14:30. Sat & Sun: 9:00 - 16:00.
