Impressive fortress that still dominates the centre of Norwich. Now a museum.

Narrow and twisty lanes to reach it but a lovely location, right on the water. The climb eastwards up to Bramerton is short but surprisingly sharp, hitting over 10%.

Norwich Castle is undergoing major works to restore the floors to their original level of the 12th century so future visitors can truly appreciate what life in the castle was like when it was built. It is still possible to appreciate the royal Norman fortress from the outside.

Fantastic location on the Water's Edge (the name might have given it away), serving upmarket meals. Currently open Wednesdays to Sundays (Sep '22).

8월 23, 2022, Norwich Castle
Norwich Castle comprises the castle, a museum and art gallery. The castle site is at least 900 years old but may currently be closed due to redevelopment. The large gallery complex converted from the city’s Victorian prison remains open during the works. It houses collections in archaeology, natural history, regimental history, and fine, decorative and contemporary art. Construction work has begun on the Norwich Castle: Royal Palace Reborn project to transform the medieval castle. Because of the building work and health and safety measures to protect visitors and staff, some areas of the castle site are not open.

8월 14, 2022, St Peter's Church, Brooke
The interior of this church looks rather modern, but St Peter has a lot of history on offer. Unusually the plain, low parapet on this tower has twelve sides to it! The round tower has been built with very clear courses of flints in its lower section, (perhaps 11th century), then a tall section of smaller flints, and the upper section with the belfry made of random flints. This top stage was probably rebuilt in the 15th century. Below the south-east nave window appears to be an early flint quoin, which perhaps marks the extent of the first 11th century church here. The whole church is supported by hefty buttresses, mostly made of red brick. The chancel dates from the 14th century, with curvilinear tracery in the east window, though this was replaced in the 19th century. It's called the Water's Edge. The Ferry House, and Coldham Hall, both at Surlingham are good options too

5월 13, 2021, Hellesdon Disused Railway Station
On the former Midland and Great Northern Railway, Hellesdon was once a bustling station. A rural line, it was part of the railway mania that swept the national, causing ranch lines to crop up all over the place. The line was closed in the 1980s and now serves as part of the Marriotts Way cycle and footpath. The trail is named after William Marriott, the manager of the line for over 40 years.

Norwich Cathedral is a stunning church dating back to 1096. Built from cream-coloured limestone, the cathedral took over 50 years to complete. You can visit the second largest cloisters in England, which has over 1,000 bosses, many of which are ornately carved and painted.

The Tas valley around Shotesham and Stoke holy cross is pleasant cycling. Good walks around the area too. I often go this way then on to the pretty village of Brooke, then the small town of Loddon, after that I’m touring the Norfolk Broads. It’s a nice route and avoids main roads.

Norwich Castle looks very special from the outside. A cube-shaped fortress from the time of the Normans. Today it is a museum that deals with history, but also exhibits works of art. In addition to visiting a museum, you can also take part in guided tours that show you the most beautiful and exciting corners of the fortress, including the roof, from which you have a breathtaking all-round view of Norwich. Norwich Castle is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. You can find more information on admission prices, guided tours and exhibitions here: https://www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk/norwich-castle
