The Pocklington Canal was constructed at the beginning of the 19th century to transport agricultural goods from the East Riding to the larger urban centres to the south and west. A Bill was placed before Parliament in 1814 and the canal was designed by George Leather Jnr, an experienced navigation engineer who worked on Goole Docks and the Knottingley and Goole Canal. The canal was opened in 1818, running for 9.5 miles from the River Derwent at East Cottingwith to a mile south of Pocklington. The cost was £32,695, which was actually less than the original estimate. Hagg Bridge is one of four bridges crossing the canal designed by George Leather.

Archetypal English village with its large village green surrounded by pretty stone houses and two pubs. The open beck runs in front of the houses in Eastgate, each with their own private bridge. The banks of the stream are planted with flowers. From here, you get a nice view of Hagg Bridge, a humpbacked crossing that spans the Pocklington Canal. The bridge looks so picturesque surrounded by the scenery of the Wolds. The fields are vibrant green, dotted with seasonal wildflowers and trees.

Howden is a market and minster town in the Vale of York, characterised by the impressive arch of the Minster's ruined chancel and the St Peter's Church.

A beautifully decorated 14th century ruin of a chancel and chapel house. The minster church is still operational. The ruin is looked after by English Heritage, but free to enter and view.

Quiet, single lane road.

Wressle Castle is a medieval ruin built as a palace-fortress in the 1390s. Once owned by Thomas Percy it is now privately owned, but open to the public on occasion. The castle was once much bigger with four sections that formed a square around a courtyard, now only one remains.

North Newbald is a 'typical' village with a village green and pubs at its centre. Ings Beck flows in front of village houses which makes it even more picturesque. It is a popular place for walkers as the Yorkshire Wolds Way passes nearby. On the village green you will see the Whipping Stone. Legend has it a man was whipped to death here but it is more likely to be the base of the old market cross. Newbald stone was used to build parts of York as well as St Mary's and the Minster in Beverley. The quarry is long since depleted.

Be careful if it's windy as it really blows along here

This climb is great but when you think youre at the end, its turns to the right and the gradient goes up a bit more

A narrow hump-backed bridge over the Pocklington Canal near Melbourne. It is currently closed to motor vehicles but remains open to cyclists and walkers. There is access to the canal towpath.
