Nice Little woodland

Despite its striking neo-Georgian design, the tower was actually constructed in the 1940s and became operational in 1950.

Watnall Spinney is a small linear band of woodland comprising a diverse range of tree and shrub species. Many of the woody species are naturally occurring and characteristic of the types of woodland found in this area. Tree species present within the woodland include English oak, common ash, English yew, lime, Field maple, common beech, cherry, horse chestnut, and sycamore. The latter has begun to dominate the composition in certain parts of the woodland, notably to the north-eastern edge.

There is a small, free car park just up from the nature reserve area, and another lay-by about 1/2 mile up. Several bridges and loop back paths cross over at various points and tracks are mainly gravel and soil. In addition, there are footpaths over fields moving away from the canal . Wildlife includes Moorhens, swans, ducks, birds, butterflies, damsel and dragonflies in various months. Lovely ‘Lord of the rings-esque’ tree tunnel when you turn right away from the canal opposite the ‘short cut’ route that takes you to Ilkeston houses and the railway bridge. Bulrushes, various flora. Level, easygoing trails. Several deep ponds are marked with signs at reserve (Trowell) end.

War memorial graves, busy road surrounding it

Just outside the city, a tower stands at nearly 100 feet that helped bring drinking water into Nottingham. Built more than 70 years ago, the Swingate Water Tower dominates the skyline around the town Kimberley just off the A610. The church is medieval, built in the mid-15th century and was restored in 1882. It had previously been restored in 1753, 1772 and 1832. However, mining subsidence caused the tower to separate from the chancel and the nave, and in 1896 the church was virtually rebuilt at a cost of £2,000. The font pre-dates the church, being 14th century.

Great waypoint or place to meet others. Good views and can be seen for miles. The the west is a very erroded gravel track which is good fun!

Shaw's Plantation is a small copse of mixed woodland that survived the motorway and local building/farming. The Robin Hood Way runs along the southern edge.

Beauvale Priory was founded in 1343 by Nicholas de Cantilupe, one of nine priories to be built in England dedicated to the Carthusian Order of monks. The monks lived a silent life here at Beauvale for 200 years until the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when they refused to sign the Oath of Supremacy acknowledging Henry VIII as the head of the Church. Through English Heritage, a specialist team of conservation architects and archaeologists have been working to preserve and consolidate the priory ruins and the gatehouse.

The Nottingham Canal is a canal in the English counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. As built, it comprised a 14.7-mile long main line between the River Trent just downstream of Trent Bridge in Nottingham and Langley Mill in Derbyshire.

The church dates from the 13th century. It was rebuilt from 1356 by Samson de Strelley. The clerestory was added in the 15th century. It was restored between 1855 and 1856 by George Gordon Place and in 1895 by Charles Hodgson Fowler. The clock in the tower was installed in 1868 and built by Reuben Bosworth.
