Whitby Harbour is a historic and bustling port at the mouth of the River Esk in North Yorkshire, offering a various attractions, shops, and dining places.

Danby Beacon is one of the highest points on the North York Moors, a historic signal station and landmark with sweeping views over the Esk Valley and surrounding moorland. It has been used for centuries as a warning beacon, a radar site in WWII. Plenty of off-road parking available, although it is quite rutted and very bumpy.

Head on out to either of the 2 main piers and experience an epic sunrise or sunset!

Nice & easy gravel (cinder) track running from Whitby to Scarborough. Well signposted so no hassle, just follow the plentiful signage. Great views from both directions around Robin Hood’s Bay

Great traffic free route. Don't miss the ravenscar tearooms at the top, with very tasty refreshments

I tend to hike/trail run early (sometimes starting around 5am), but I passed through Danby mid-morning on a Saturday and the smell coming from the bakery was heavenly. All the excuse you need for adding Danby to your route!

Hawsker was a railway station on the Scarborough & Whitby Railway. It opened on 16 July 1885, and served the villages of High Hawsker, Low Hawsker and Stainsacre. Previously used for potash. Now a nice memorial in place of a time that was. You can go onto the train and have a cup of tea and piece of cake. A reat and memorable stop mid ride.

Old disused brick quarry with lots of left over bricks. Cool to see the local history and so well preserved on this lovely coastal walk.

Not too sure which part of the route this is, however a lot of the route is more for walker's than cyclists. It is rutted, the surface is very uneven and to be honest quite dangerous for experienced through to young cyclists.

I would check the tide times before visiting again, as although it is still exceptionally pretty at high tide, the high water mark is well up the slipway at the bottom of King St. so no opportunity to walk out onto the beach.

Still not much to see in July 2024, quite overgrown, but that just means it's nice and green. A peaceful spot just off the Cinder Track.

Don't miss the railway platform next to the tearoom, only surviving remnant of Ravenscar Station. Fascinating information board describing the history of "The Town That Never Was".

In 1619, a packhorse bridge called Beggar’s Bridge was constructed over the River Esk by Thomas Ferris, the son of a local moorland sheep farmer. The bridge’s history is intertwined with a romantic legend about Thomas and his sweetheart, Agnes Richardson. Allegedly, Thomas used to wade through the river to meet Agnes secretly since her father disapproved of their relationship due to Thomas’s lack of wealth. Thomas sought his fortune on the high seas to win her father’s approval. However, on the eve of his departure, he could not cross the river to bid farewell to his beloved due to the river’s flood. Thomas swore an oath that he would build a bridge in that very spot one day. Years later, having returned to Glaisdale, a wealthy man and married Agnes, Thomas fulfilled his promise by constructing Beggar’s Bridge.

Awesome waterfall and quiet cove not far off the Cinder Track
