The war memorial in Rickerby Park, Carlisle, is an impressive tribute to the fallen of the First World War, later expanded to include commemorations for the Second World War and subsequent conflicts. Officially opened on May 25, 1922, by the Earl of Lonsdale, it commemorates the men and women from Cumberland and Westmorland who gave their lives in the Great War. Formal gardens and a monumental entrance were added in 1932–33 by landscape architect Edward Prentice Mawson and city engineer Percy Dalton.

I missed the cairns on my first visit, so keep an eye on the map to ensure you reach the summit cairns and appreciate the best view in the area :)

There were signs displayed saying cycle platform or cycle storage as soon as I went through an entrance. Due to the adverse weather I was focused on other issues and can not recall exactly what the signs say. The train station offers decent weather protection. Cafes, shelter rooms and areas, toilets, it is easy to ride into the train station and is permitted

Located south of the village, the surroundings of the reservoir are ideal for a peaceful route around the water and enjoying the wildlife. This infrastructure was built in the early 20th century.

As part of the Earls of Carlisle estate, these limekilns were built in the first half of the 19th century, next to the quarry. If you continue around the tarn, from the opposite side, you'll also have very beautiful (and broader) views of this spot.

This building near Tindale Tarn is a Grade II listed structure that was constructed in the late 15th century as a tower house for Lord Dacre. Later, in the mid-19th century, it was expanded. Some of the sandstone rubble walls in the older section can be as thick as two meters.

Detouring off the main path for a bit, you can easily reach this small structure from where you can peacefully observe not only the tarn but also the wildlife around it.

Carlisle is a wonderful place to begin or end a ride. There are a number of impressive landmarks, including Carlisle Castle & Carlisle Cathedral, as well as a wealth of independent shops, cafés, restaurants and bars.

An old stone bridge crossing the river Gelt between low and high Hynam. This gives access to Talkin Fell and further afield from the parking at Jockey Shield Cottage. The river path heading southeast is worth exploring passing a series of rapids and a nice waterfall as well as the Gelt Boulder.
