Berkhamsted Castle is a formidable Norman motte-and-bailey fortress in Hertfordshire. It is historically famous as the site where the Anglo-Saxons surrendered to William the Conqueror in 1066. For over 400 years, it served as a high-status royal residence, home to figures such as Thomas Becket, the Black Prince, and even Geoffrey Chaucer, who managed its upkeep. Architecturally, it is distinguished by its massive 12-metre motte and a rare, well-preserved system of double moats. Though largely in ruins today, the earthworks remain among the most impressive in England. Now managed by English Heritage, the site is free to explore and offers a direct link to the events that followed the Battle of Hastings.

nice little quiet village, The greyhound pub located near to the pond, serves delicious food and friendly atmosphere contributed both from the staff and patrons

I do like this stretch - the top is pretty, and it is a nice short hill both ways, but the surface is very broken with lots of gravel.

Enjoyed my visit to Berkhampstead Castle. Another example of fortifications erected following the invasion of England by William The Conquerer in 1066. The aim, a symbol of power over the conquered Anglo-Saxons and the Normans wanted to make sure it stayed that way!!

During WWI, Berkhamsted was used by troops to train for trench life on the continent. They would live in a nearby tented camp, stand parade on Kitchener’s Field, and trained on Berkhamsted and Northchurch Commons. These were officers from the Inns of Court Officers Training Corp., otherwise known as The Devil’s Own. These officers dug 13 miles of trenches here in training for the real thing that they would shortly face opposite enemy lines. These days there is an information board here, a memorial, and of course the trenches.

Fantastic history here and appreciate what is left standing. A very peaceful lawn and area to take some quiet time out

This Tower was built in memory of Francis Egerton, who was the Third Duke of Bridgewater. Egerton was an expert in inland navigation. He was involved in the construction of the Bridgewater Canal (joining Worsley and Manchester), which is the first modern British canal. He also built the canal joining Liverpool and Manchester. Not only that, but he made 2 million pounds out of these adventures and ventures. Be sure to walk up to the top of the Tower. The views from up there are tremendous.

Short and steep.

Ashridge house and the surrounding woods are a great spot for a ride or a run. Elizabeth 1 spent parts of her childhood at the house.

Aldbury Nowers Nature Reserve is best visited during spring and summer, when its wildflowers are at their most colourful, and you can expect to see butterflies fluttering between them. This lovely region of chalk grassland is located towards the northeastern end of the Ridgeway long-distance trail, not far from Pitstone Hill's summit.

Known for its picturesque qualities, this charming village is a Hertfordshire favourite. Explore timber-framed cottages and quintessential old British pubs as you wander around the beautiful streets.

The Start of many walks. The station in the middle of nowhere! Plenty of routes to explore either circular or the next station along. Wherever that may be.
