Walking through Harlow on a Sunday was quiet an Experience 🎒👋

As of September 2025, the bridge has been fixed up with an all-weather type of surface. There's also improved ramps up onto it, from both directions, so no more getting off in order to cross.

Smooth fast gravel surface Byway, mostly flat straight lines with some technical bits thrown in. Recommended in dry conditions/maybe passable in the wet, too - with the right tyres/bike. 🚲 🚵

Been here quite often, not the best, not the worst, just quite overgrown, but still a nice spot put together by some people!

A great part of a cut through from Harlow to Gilston. Beware at times of heavy rainfall however as the road does flood considerably!

The practical and peaceful way of getting between Gilston and Burnt Mill Lane. For those who don't know, Eastwick Road is hella busy and undulates awkwardly around the bend in the region of Terlings Avenue and Burnt Mill Lane.

An artists' hub - glass blowing, painting, pottery, even a luthier (guitar maker)! Remember to walk your bike through the gate and across the bridge so as not to upset those working at the Mill.

In winter and early spring you can all but forget about crossing here. In drier weather it's a great way across the Stort valley into Hertfordshire.

Old Harlow is a town known for a few things, namely its historic buildings, central museum, and brilliant pubs. It's also home to the Gibberd Garden, created by Sir Frederick Gibberd and his wife Patricia. The gardens showcase a number of impressive sculptures and ceramic pots, as well as glades, ponds, and flower-filled alleys.

Burnt Mill Lock sits along the scenic River Stort Navigation, situated adjacent to Harlow Town train station. This charming waterway is dotted with vibrant canal boats and inviting grassy banks ideal for resting your legs. A picturesque pub named The Moorhen is located near the lock. There are fab waterside views from both inside the pub and from the sunny beer garden. They specialise in chargrilled cuisine, so if you're feeling peckish, I'd definitely recommend a stop.

Parndon Mill has a rich history dating back to the 19th century, when it operated as a busy watermill. The original mill was burnt down by a fire in 1897, but rebuilt in 1900 and transformed into a community arts hub. The mill has studios, galleries, and workshops for local artists and craftspeople. There's also a pretty lock and great views down the river from here, a nice place to sit and enjoy a snack.

July 2023 - fully accessible but be prepared for bumps! Torn up by moto-x, horses and maybe even 4x4's in the wetter months so it becomes quite tricky when it dries out!

A very deep Ford - I've paddled a canoe through here before.

A nice way to get from the pinnacles to Great Parndon. Climb the hill for some great views to the south of Harlow.

Regular cyclists should not be tempted to use this as a cut-through, stick with the pavements.

I would avoid, as even if it's dry in summer, it's overgrown.

Bring your spare underwear. A brilliant little spot put together by some locals. Enjoy!

It's tempting for cyclists to use the river to cut between Stortford/Sawbo/Harlow, but in all honesty, avoid it, there are too many people about and it's not wise to get speed up.
