Food is exceptional, great stop off point after a long walk around the reservoir.

Nice place to visit on bike, they have a cafe to eat in or out they sell ice cream, cake the usual. more for walkers and runners around the lake.

Komoot recommends this hike; so do I. There are quite a few twists and turns on this route, but it passes by quite a few interesting places, such as the Lever Bridge, the Japanese garden, the Pigeon Tower and the Rivington Pike, apart from the lovely scenery and remnants of Lever’s old bungalow.

The original medieval Liverpool Castle stood in Liverpool near the waterfront, which is about 22 miles southwest of Rivington, but it had been demolished in the 1720s. The currently-existing structure named Liverpool Castle is a scaled replica that was commissioned by Lord Leverhulme. Work started in 1912 and continued until Lord Leverhulme’s death in 1925. Relatively few people had been assigned to the construction of the building, so the structure was not quite finished, although the folly was supposed to look like the ruins of a castle anyway. In the years since Lord Leverhulme’s death, the area Castle, fell into disrepair. Weeds started growing on the castle’s masonry, people vandalized the walls, and a spiral staircase within the castle collapsed in the early 1980s. Liverpool Castle is still slowly crumbling, transforming from a folly meant to imitate the ruins of a castle into actual ruins.

A quaint little coffee and cake stop at the edge of some great riding and hiking.

The Witton Weavers Way is four loops which link together to create a 33 mile (53km) long distance footpath. The whole thing is a big loop from Witton Park, Lancashire. This section walks between Turton Heights and the reservoir.

Barrow Bridge is renowned for its iconic 63 steps, which mill workers once used daily to reach their jobs. Today these steps will guide you up to the stunning West Pennine Moors.

Great view of the valley. Very busy with cars coming up the road getting to the Pike. They don’t often have vegan stock, so don’t count on them to refuel halfway. There’s a resident dog that is friendly, loves to come up to dogs on lead, if your dog is reactive on lead keep them away. Resident dog is free roaming.

Here at Prestolee Locks are the remains of six locks, in two flights of three, and in between the two flights was a passing pound where the lock-keeper's cottage was. The canal was closed down in 1961 due to a lack of commercial activity. It is a very interesting area, and I like that they have invested in the construction of the ‘Meccano Bridge’ footbridge here to replace the old horse bridge. It is quite funny too that the location is known locally as Nob End—nothing like a bit of northern humour!
