superb walk

From the Gaschney parking lot, it's about a 15-minute walk along a mountain path to reach the Schallern. Wear hiking boots and leave your rolling suitcases at home: the path climbs a bit… but the view at the top is well worth the effort!

Beautiful peat bog, reminds me of Scotland, where you often walk on granite peat. It vibrates under your feet. Two photos show my stick with the tip of it in it, and also all the way in. The peat is quite thick here. Beautiful vegetation, and lizards can be seen too.

The raised bog is a wonderfully tranquil place. One path leads along the moor to the south, another from the northeast a few meters into the bog. Depending on the angle of the light, the otherwise green moor grass shimmers red. Unfortunately, there is no bench here—it would probably sink—but even standing here, you can enjoy a break and let your gaze wander over the moor.

You have to know that there's a viewpoint here—otherwise, all you'll see from the path are rocks and you might carelessly walk past them, because they block the view of the actual viewpoint. Once you find it, you'll have a fantastic view of the valley.

Beautiful saddle with 360-degree views in both directions. Continue a bit further to Klein Honneck, where you'll also see the lake below and enjoy an even wider panorama.

Currently (August 2025), there is a small photo exhibition in the chapel. It shows and describes various medicinal plants that grow in the area.
