A diamond-shaped wooden post chapel attached to a concrete post, containing a decoratively carved wooden cross with an inscription "1931-1993" at the base of the shaft. The cross is crowned with a lily. A detached statue of Christ sits in the front right corner. A wooden kneeler stands in front of the cross. "This is where Francies Van der Heyden was murdered on November 9, 1913, at the age of 68." it says on the cross. "Behind the words on this murder cross lies a history of childhood love, hatred and revenge between two neighboring families," the information board states. Another information board, about a hundred meters further, explains the underlying history: When a fire broke out in Cies Boaves barn, he suspected Frans H. of having started the fire. Frans H. was the brother of Irma, who had a relationship with Cies' son, Emiel. Cies' demands that that relationship be broken. A month later Cies is found here, murdered with 26 stab wounds. Frans H. confessed to the murder.

The site of this statue, the Balei, is the highest point in Sint-Lievenshoutem (83m above sea level). The statue refers to the 'Ouden Heirweg' (Old Heir Road), the Roman road between Boulogne, Asse, and Tongeren, which ran past here. From 1596 onwards, the local gallows stood on the Balei. The name of the slope therefore comes from Banlo, which means 'forest for justice'. Sources: Information board on site Wikipedia

Two thousand years ago, Sint-Lievens-Houtem was located on the Roman highway Velzeke-Asse-Tongeren. As a reminder of this, the Roman soldier, a 3 m high bronze Roman soldier, was erected on the Balei, a statue by artist Robert Goossens that was inaugurated on September 5, 2004.
