The Bels Broek en Heide is a sub-area of the Grote Netewoud in the municipalities of Geel and Meerhout. It is located on the right bank of the Grote Nete River, here called the Meerhoutse Nete, and consists of drifting dunes, swamp forests, and heathland. The Heikantse fort was located in the Biezen region, near the hamlet of 't Gebergte. This hamlet consisted of a row of adjoining houses. The distance between the fort and the residential area was approximately 500 meters. The fort bordered the Kwacht marsh and the Kwachtloop stream, which originated from the marsh: an ideal refuge. For those unfamiliar with the area, finding a way to the fort was an impossible task. The plot was approximately 3/4 hectare in size and shaped like an irregular rectangle. In the current landscape, the location is still clearly recognizable as a lower-lying meadow. The oldest reference to this fort dates from 1683. Otherwise, the fort is known only through chance references: a piece of land or a field was rented or sold and was located near the fort. The meadow to the left of the Kwachtloop was used as a fortification by residents of the hamlets of 't Gebergte and Heikant in the 17th and 18th centuries. The irregular square shape is still clearly visible between the moats. Meerhout had no fewer than eight fortifications during the turbulent 17th century. One war flowed seamlessly into the next. Residents were constantly forced to fortify themselves in lower-lying, water-surrounded mini-villages for protection against roving armies of undisciplined scoundrels.
