Hi Martin, I have a specific question. I read elsewhere that you crossed from Belgium to the Netherlands from Knokke through the Zwingeul on October 31, 2024. Did you specifically wait for the lowest tide before wading through the water?

The interplay of ebb and flow in the Zwin creates an exceptional habitat in Europe, a tidal area consisting of mudflats and salt marshes. Only highly specialized plants, such as samphire and sea lavender, survive in this unique saltwater habitat. The mudflats provide a rich and varied food source for thousands of birds. It's no wonder the Zwin is described as an international airport for exotic birds! These birds are present in large numbers year-round to breed, overwinter, or forage for food.

The Zwin with its unique character, due to the regular flooding from the sea, can be seen very well from this platform. This tidal landscape with mudflats and salt marshes is a favourite destination for many birds and is therefore called the international airport for birds.

The hopping hare that you can find in the dunes at the end of the sea wall of Knokke is a bronze sculpture by Barry Flanagan. Although the official name is Hospitality, the hare is also called keuning van’t Zwin, Bugs Bunny or t' keun by the locals.

Passed today October 31, 2024 at low tide without problem with wet feet (30 cm of water)!
