Public toilets at the church

The Sint-Martinuskerk is the church of the Belgian village Werken, located at the Werkenplein. The church and the parish are named after Saint Martin. The church is located in the village centre on a hill, and is surrounded by lime trees. Around the church is a pilgrimage route with seven chapels, surrounded by a beech hedge. Nearby is the "Hogen Andjoen", a motte as a remnant of an early medieval settlement.

...with a special inscription: "H. Mary, Door of Heaven". The way in which Mary is presented here, with child Jesus in her arms between open window shutters, seems to translate the title quite literally.

You can recognize it from a distance: this is a convent building. It was founded in 1894 in response to a need experienced by the Sisters of Vincent de Paul and the parish clergy as early as 1846 among the population of the hamlet of Markhove: the distance from the center of Kortemark was preventing children from attending school. Therefore, in 1860, a school was opened in a purchased house. When the road to Ichtegem was straightened, new buildings were constructed on the grounds of the "Markhove estate." In 1944, the convent and school were converted into an SS concentration camp by the German occupying forces. The more than 300 prisoners worked in the greater Kortemark area, constructing V-1 launch sites. On September 1, 1944, 39 prisoners of war escaped, three of whom were shot. Their bodies were buried by the Germans at the graveyard of number 100. After the Second World War, they were buried in the Kortemark cemetery. As early as 1333, 'Baroudsdamme' is mentioned as a strategic fortification along the then still navigable Handzamevaart. Here was also an unloading place for ships. 'Barsdamme' was a large 'landing' that connected to the road network to Staden and Hooglede. All kinds of goods brought in on the water were offered for sale. The castle was demolished around 1850 and replaced by a farm. This farm was destroyed during the First World War and rebuilt in 1921. The walled motte (upper courtyard) with farmhouse has been protected as a monument since 2002.
