The Stekense Vaart or the Stekene Canal (4.6 km) is a canal that connects the Moervaart with Stekene. In the past, the canal extended to Hulst and had an important economic function. Surrounded by quiet areas along both banks, the Stekense Vaart now forms the setting for soft recreation. (Wikipedia)

Here is a bridge over the Stekense vaart that is used by walkers/cyclists to cross. The F41 also runs over this bridge, connecting Antwerp via Beveren, Sint-Gillis-Waas, Moerbeke-Waas and Wachtebeke with Zelzate. On the old railway embankment, the F41 crosses the Waasland in a straight line.

It is well worth stopping on top of the bridge. The view from the Stekense Vaart looks like a landscape painting. The bridge is named after honorary citizen Frans Coppens from Klein-Sinaai. As receiver-clerk he made a great contribution in his career. The canal used to be an important connection between the Dutch Hulst and Ghent.

This bridge ensures that you can cross the Zuidlede dry-shod. Be aware that the road surface can be dangerously slippery in wet weather. Tip: cross this curved bridge with some caution.

From 1873, Klein-Sinaai had its own station. At the back there was a marshalling yard to load the freight from a platform onto the train. Fun fact: the station barrier was rolled manually onto the track when a train was approaching. The Klein-Sinaai railway line was closed halfway through the 20th century. Nowadays it is a popular stop for walkers and cyclists. Source: municipality of Stekene

5월 19, 2025, Langelede Canal Path
The Langelede was dug to enable the transport of peat. The peat came from a bog area, owned by the abbey of Marquette. It is not clear when this happened, although it is known that the name 'langhe lee' first appeared in 1317. After the bog soils were exhausted, the Langelede fell into disuse. The revival came in 1775, when the Moervaart and Langelede were canalised to enable the drainage of excess water from Ghent. The route via the current Lange Boomstraat was replaced by a new section towards the Oudenburgse sluis. However, the treaty of 1839 limited the drainage to the Netherlands and the Langelede had to be dammed. Afterwards, it was still used for the transport of white sand and sugar beets. You wouldn't expect it, but here you are face to face with a herd of elephants. One by one beautiful works of art on the edge of the forest. This collection is part of the Verbeke Foundation. The Verbeke Foundation: what is it actually? The Verbeke Foundation is the brainchild of art collectors Geert Verbeke and Carla Verbeke-Lens. This private art site houses a magnificent collection of modern and contemporary works of art that are spread out in the landscape. As if a splinter bomb of creativity has exploded here and the shards have emerged as masterfully idiosyncratic art. In short: you get lost in 12 hectares of nature reserve and discover a total of 20,000 square meters of covered pavilions. This sanctuary is an inimitable place, where not only the works of established artists are shown to their best advantage. A promising generation of young wolves is also given every opportunity here. Welcome to one of the largest private initiatives for contemporary art in Europe.
