The Nete Canal connects the Albert Canal at Viersel with the navigable section of the Nete River, downstream of Lier near Duffel. A little further on, the Nete flows into the Rupel, the waterway to the Scheldt. The canal allows ships from the south or west to reach the Albert Canal without having to pass through Antwerp. The section between the Rupel and Duffel was already navigable in 1839. The section to Viersel, via Lier, only followed in 1952. Since 1955, the Nete Canal has been the main supply route from the Albert Canal for Antwerp's drinking water supply, operated by the Antwerp Waterworks.

From the Sion Bridge, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge, you can see the confluence of the Grote Nete and Kleine Nete rivers. The entire landscape is situated within the Nazareth Nature Reserve. A lovely place to relax.

A beautiful, shady walking path that follows the medieval city walls. Description: The Lier city ramparts, officially called a "city walk" but simply "De fort(en)" (The ramparts) in the city's vernacular, are a 5-kilometer-long green corridor around Lier's city center. The war memorial in Lier commemorates victims of the First and Second World Wars. However, not all the names of the victims are listed on the memorial. Designed by Arthur Dupon. Queen Elisabeth modeled for the face of Nike (goddess of victory). Unveiled in 1927 at the Vismarkt, it was later moved (in 1967) to its current location. Source: Trace of War
