Here we find ourselves at a modern technical structure of almost unimaginable dimensions. This enormous facility – like probably every project of this magnitude – has two aspects: Some may be in awe of the engineering that made it possible to plan and build this gigantic structure at the end of the 20th century. Others may be more concerned with the enormous intervention in nature that was necessary to realize the project and may doubt its usefulness. However, such a conflict of interest is by no means only a sign of the times, for the monumental – some might prefer the term monstrous – structure is the modern descendant of a series of significantly smaller ship lifts that were built in earlier times – and have now even been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an industrial monument. The Arquennes Swing Bridge is a metal swing bridge over the old Charleroi-Brussels Canal in Arquennes, a sub-municipality of Seneffe in the province of Hainaut. The bridge is actually a double-deck bridge, with a raised fixed section for pedestrians, and a movable section at street level for car traffic. The car bridge rotated on its horizontal axis in the middle of the canal, creating two passageways when the bridge was open. The bridge was classified as a site on 7 November 1978 and classified as a monument on 4 August 1989 by the province of Hainaut. Because the old canal was replaced by a wider canal and the Ronquières inclined plane took over the function of the many locks on the old canal, the bridge has become a fixed structure and both the pedestrian bridge and the central pontoon in the canal have fallen into disrepair.
