The gate also serves as a bridge over the Kalebeek stream. The north facade of the gate (facing the church) features, in addition to the date 1864, the coat of arms of the t'Kint de Roodenbeke family, who acquired the castle that year (and still own it).

Near the Bathio self-service ferry, you can cross the water again, this time via a wooden bridge, crossing not the Old Leie branch, but the Rekkelinge, a stream no longer than 1.6 km. This stream, however, holds a special place in local history: on July 13, 1325, a bloody battle took place here between Flemish workers and peasants who were fed up with the taxes and terror imposed by the French king and his Flemish noble allies. There was fierce resistance, and cities such as Bruges and Deinze joined in. In Ghent, an army of the Francophone nobility and their allies gathered to teach the mob a lesson. With an army of a few thousand men, they advanced towards Deinze. At the Rekkelingebeek, near the village of Bachte, they were met by an equally strong peasant army and the city militias of Bruges and Deinze. During a fierce confrontation, many nobles were killed, including the Ghent leader and knight Willem Wenemaer. Source: HLN

The Bathio self-service ferry crosses the Oude Leie arm between DVC Leieborg (a facility for people with intellectual or multiple disabilities) and Vosselareput, a swimming pond with a sunbathing area and bar. If you're heading towards the DVC, you can immediately turn left (before the path crosses a small wooden bridge) and follow the meander. If you're heading towards Vosselareput, you'll walk straight through the Leyhoek, the meadows enclosed by the meander. In both cases, you'll arrive at the Leie between two pleasant spots for relaxation: Zomerbar Belderbos (slightly to the left, towards Deinze) and Astene-Sas, to the right.

't Oud Sashuis is actually a block of lock keeper's houses (hence: two front doors, one of which is now converted into a 'counter' where you can order your drinks) dating back to 1860.

To my knowledge, it's the only bridge where you don't swear, but are actually grateful that you have to wait because a boat needs to go through the lock. The manual lifting, the whole lock process, and the cheerful note from the lock keeper who politely thanks those waiting afterward... it's quite an experience.

Early walkers will be disappointed: Wim doesn't open the shop before 1 p.m.

This meander of the Leie was cut off in 1867 and completely encloses the Leie meadows of Astene and Bachte. The winding riverbed is a magnet for numerous plants and animals. (natuurpunt.be)
