The Roeselare-Leie Canal is a shipping canal between the city of Roeselare and the Leie River at Wielsbeke. It is 16.5 kilometers long. Via the Leie River, it connects the port of Roeselare with the ports of Dunkirk, Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels, and Liège. Dug between 1862 and 1872, it provided significant employment. Ships loaded (up to 600 tons for the port of Roeselare) with grain, sand, and other commodities sailed up the canal to supply the businesses along its banks. For both brush makers and shoemakers, two crafts that shaped Izegem's former glory, pitching was an important step in production. This figurine (1989) by Marc Claerhout refers to both crafts. For brushes, the bristles or fibers had to be secured in the holes in the wooden holder. This was done either with pitch (the bundles of raw material were glued into the holes; that's pitching) or with wire or rope (in which case it was called "pulling" the brushes). In shoemaking, pitching was the treatment of sewing thread (pitch thread), which consisted of twisted hemp thread, which was then soaked in pitch, making the thread stronger and the shoe sewn with pitch thread waterproof. To distribute the pitch over the thread, it first had to soften. The shoemaker did this by keeping it in his trouser pocket, where it was nice and warm. Brushmakers pitch brushes, shoemakers sew shoes with pitch thread. Both enjoy a beer after work or after delivering their work to the factory. With the money they earn, they often spend too much time pitching—or sticking—at the pub. Nowadays, the pitcher is the mascot of Izegem.
